Discussion:
HTTP1.1/ 204 NoContent Error

Hi,

I'm using Lynx Version 2.8.7rel 2 libwww-FM 214
SSL-MM 1.4.1 OpenSSL 0.9.8 ncurses 5.0.19991023

I'm using an older computer with Debian/GNU Linux 2.2.19

For about 5 years I've use lynx to access amazon.com
using http://www.amazon.com/access without a hitch.

Today I tried to log in to my account and I get this
message:

"Alert! HTTP1.1/ 204 NoContent" on several links,
like cart, login, etc.

Their webpage also tells me I have my "caps lock on" which
it is not, and that I don't have "cookies" enabled, which I do.

I called their technical support, in the Philippines, no less,
and explained the problem. I don't know if I got through to them.

Lynx works fine on other web sites, like http://www.abebooks.com,
etc. The cookies are working on other sites, to I don't know
what gives.

I was wondering if anyone else who uses amazon.com with
Lynx has had this problem in the past day or so.

It was working fine Thursday.

Thanks,

If you can run the requests with -trace on you will get a file called
Lynx.trace in your home directory, which should provide some clues.

You can post some of it here if it's not clear.

Here is the trace file. I tried to keep my session as short
as possible.

lynx -trace http://www.amazon.com/access
check the account got error message then quit.

Hi,
I'm using Lynx Version 2.8.7rel 2 libwww-FM 214
SSL-MM 1.4.1 OpenSSL 0.9.8 ncurses 5.0.19991023
I'm using an older computer with Debian/GNU Linux 2.2.19
For about 5 years I've use lynx to access amazon.com
using http://www.amazon.com/access without a hitch.
Today I tried to log in to my account and I get this
If you can run the requests with -trace on you will get a file called
Lynx.trace in your home directory, which should provide some clues.
You can post some of it here if it's not clear.

Hi,

I solved the "Alert! HTTP/1.1 204 NoContent" problem
with http://www.amazon.com/accss tonight by chance.

I went into the options and unchecked "Send User_Agent header(!)".
I was able to login into my account and check my cart, etc.
It still said that my caps lock was on and that I didn't
have cookies enabled, but it left some entries. Interesting.

Unfortunately, (maybe it's for the best) Lynx doesn't save
the unchecked box and re-checks it when you re-start.

It's configurable - see this in lynx.cfg:

Oh I can top that one.
I use the main amazon.com site, not the access one. so I first visited to
see if things were the same, not recognizing my cookie etc.
then I tried Gordon's suggestion, unchecked the box, and my information
returned to normal. as in hello Karen Lewellen etc. Likewise the
no content error disappeared.
But that is not all.
There are more and more places where I meet with the 403 forbidden error
one of them is here.
www.33daypath.com
if you go there with lynx minus the suggested change you will get the
forbidden error.
For kicks I tried going with the change, and the page displayed
perfectly!
Agreed it does return to default once you leave the browser because it
cannot be saved. But I have a ton of places that I cannot visit which I
will be testing again to learn if this plays a role.

Often adding "MSIE5" to the User-Agent, or prepending
"Mozilla/5.0 (compatible); " to it will also help.

This avoids not sending the Lynx identifier, while
fooling most “evil” webservers (that restrict based
on the User-Agent) into serving one.

Netcologne’s web presence is one of these, too…

Not sending any User-Agent, especially permanently, is not good.
Consider making you a shell alias, like this:

alias lynxmoz="lynx -useragent='Mozilla/5.0 (compatible); Lynx/2.8.8pre.5 libwww-FM/2.14 SSL-MM/1.4.1 GNUTLS/2.12.23' "

(This value for Lynx in Debian unstable.)

Hi,
You are welcome...I think, if the debian list comment refers to me.
However, I am not using debian either. Instead my access to lynx is via
shell services. <spelling> freebds here at shellworld, or the shell
provided by my web hosting company who uses <spelling> ubintu now.
Is there a present option in Lynx that will simulate the idea you reference
here?
I respect the wisdom of not permanently using Gordon's solution. There
are not many places where I am forbidden, but just enough for it to be
something I would rather have a way to prevent.

Hi,
I just checked myself.
by the way, have you tried the mail amazon site?
I personally find the access one too watered down for use. although last
December into jan, I spent a dreadful amount of time trying to get things
fixed since I could log in, but part of the payment structure changed.
When I checked just now, the site is pretending that lynx has no cookie
ability.
I just ignore the caps lock message if it shows, thinking it is how the
system reads normal text or something.
I removed an amazon cookie from my .lynx_cookies file recently.
In fact that gives me a chance to ask something. I have a ton of of them from
amazon for example. I use lynx daily for most everything, so this file is
large, and sometimes a cookie can no longer be read because of the stuff
on top.
If I am doing cookie jar cleaning smiles. how are these added, meaning are these
amazon cookies at the top the most current, or the ones further down?
The no content error indeed shows if you try going to the access page, at
all. if you try to sign in at the main page I just pretends for me that
cookies are not turned on...after allowing a cookie I might add.
Will dig out my phone number for them and call too.

Hi,
I'm using Lynx Version 2.8.7rel 2 libwww-FM 214
SSL-MM 1.4.1 OpenSSL 0.9.8 ncurses 5.0.19991023
I'm using an older computer with Debian/GNU Linux 2.2.19
