Red Hat provides Lynx as a package (yum install lynx).

This may be a silly question, but I am wondering.
There is a precompiled edition of lynx for dos, the elements used go back
a bit.
is it possible to upgrade your edition by simply substituting the lynx.cfg
and lynx.exe files for the package you already have?
Or does one have to seek an entirely new compile?

"dos" as such sounds like djgpp - it's been quite a while.

The installers that I've been building are win32 (should be able to
run on Windows 2000 and later).

aside from lynx.cfg and lynx.exe, there's not much (lynx.lss perhaps)

Actually, Doug built this compile about a year and a half ago. Sent a copy
to me, and i only slightly got a chance to play with it.
am considering putting it on my laptop though, so wondered.
perhaps a fun experiment.
